Encourage courage

I just had a thought after re-reading a thing I wrote about a brave young man I saw playing guitar in public. I just wrote about how I admired his courage and determination, even though it was obvious he was only starting-out.

Encouraging people who are working on improving themselves or their communities is something which I would strongly encourage you to engage in. It’s easy, and have have a massive impact.

When people stick their necks out in a good way, doing something you would like to see more of (e.g. bravery, kindness, generosity, strength, discipline, etc.), I believe it’s important to encourage them somehow.

This post is my effort to encourage encouragement.

I don’t think most people realize how much of an impact on another human being they can have on… like, even while on a grocery run.

Boring daily life. Just going about your day. Think about any compliments you’ve received in your life. I’m willing to bet there are a couple which stand out in your mind – whether you’ve had two or two thousand. Think about the times a stranger has helped you in something –either in passing, or something which redirected their day.

Encouragement, platonic compliment, or words of welcome can all be given for next-to-nothing, but have value for the recipient for the rest of their lives.

Not only that, but the look in their eye will likely stick with you just as long – it feels good to be good.

What about [insert fear here]?

You’re right; it could happen. It’s not likely, but it could happen.

I choose to assume the positive, rather than the negative, in cases where my safety isn’t likely in question.

Don’t assume someone else will do it. The same people you assume are doing it are likely thinking that exact thing.

Do it. It costs, you nothing, you risk little, and it could mean more than you’ll ever know.
